What is the difference between AEO, SEO and GEO?
SEO earns your pages a ranking in a list of links. AEO (Answer Engine Optimization) earns your brand a place inside the answer an AI tool gives. GEO (Generative Engine Optimization) is a closely related term from a 2023 research paper for improving how often content appears in AI-generated responses.
SEO: ranking in a list of links
Search Engine Optimization improves where your pages rank on search engines like Google and Bing. Success is measured in rankings, clicks and traffic.
AEO: being named in the answer
Answer Engine Optimization makes your brand the one AI names when customers ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Claude or Google AI Overviews a question. Success is measured in how often you are named, how accurately you are described, and the visits and sales those answers send.
GEO: the research term
Generative Engine Optimization was introduced in a 2023 paper by researchers from Princeton University and other institutions, accepted at the KDD 2024 conference. The paper describes ways content creators can improve their visibility in responses from generative engines, and reports that its methods can boost visibility by up to 40%. In practice, most agencies use AEO and GEO to describe overlapping work.
How they fit together
They are not rivals. AI answers draw heavily on pages that already rank well in search, so strong SEO feeds AEO. AEO adds the work SEO does not cover: consistent facts about your brand across the web, pages written to be quoted, and mentions on the sites AI trusts.
Which one do you need?
If your buyers research before they buy, you need both. SEO keeps you findable in search results; AEO makes sure that when the answer appears without a click, your brand is in it.
