What is a zero-click search, and why does it matter?

By Tai Orser, Founder of Endoxic  ·  Updated October 4, 2026

Short answer

A zero-click search ends without the searcher clicking any result. In the first four months of 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended that way, according to SparkToro. When people get their answer on the results page, the brands named in that answer win attention that ranked links never see.

The numbers

SparkToro, using Similarweb clickstream data, found that 68.01% of US Google searches ended without a click from January to April 2026, up from 60.45% in 2024. Search Engine Land's coverage of the study notes that AI Overviews now appear on more than 20% of Google searches.

Why it matters for your business

Fewer clicks means fewer visits from ranking alone. The decision increasingly happens inside the answer itself, in an AI Overview, a featured answer or an AI assistant. If your brand is not named there, the buyer may never reach your website.

What still works

Being the brand the answer names. That means clear facts about your business, pages that answer real questions directly, and mentions on the sites AI trusts. It is the work Answer Engine Optimization (AEO) covers.

Is SEO dead?

No. AI answers draw heavily on pages that rank well, and searches for specific brands and products still send clicks. But rankings alone no longer guarantee visits, so AEO and SEO work best together.
